Bildet er høyst sannsynlig tatt utenfor Trondheim sommeren 1940 da det ble utført (midlertidige) reparasjoner etter at Gneisenau var torpedert av den britiske undervannsbåten HMS Clyde. At Gneisenau er kamuflasjemalt og at skipet som er fortøyd langs siden ser ut til å være verkstedsskipet Huascaran, tyder på det.
